Cornershop Music Video
Cornershop - 'Double Denim' - ample play records
This is my first full music video for one of my all time favourite bands, Cornershop. I drew, photographed and animated every element of the video myself.
The Double Denim video comprises three main elements for me. For the first I took the track literally and used the durability of denim as a customisable material as my starting point. People often pin badges and sew patches onto denim to express their love for music or causes and sometimes even draw or spray paint directly onto it.
Secondly, Tjinder Singh expressed that he wanted a fictional band to be in the video, like the 60s phenomenon of The Archies, whose Sugar Sugar is covered on the other side of this single. So I created a 60s cartoon-inspired multicultural band called Heavy Duty who all wear denim. So far people have compared the band animation to everything from Hannah Barbera and Peanuts cartoons to Tintin illustrations.
Finally the idea of a couple having a wild night out was factored in, hence the night swimming scene and the crowds eventually watching the band at 3am, which then turns into a wild jungle.
I also included the imagery of a mural commission I'd completed for Tjinder two years earlier. That's the 'me and you' Fab Lolly and ice cream part.
The hand-drawn fonts are inspired by a wide variety of musical styles, just like Cornershop's music is. There's reggae style patches, heavy metal badges, 70s disco signs, and 80s keyboards and roller-skates.
The video was achieved by creating a large amount of drawings and illustrations - maybe 30 to 40. Each individual element was initially drawn by hand, photographed, then coloured and animated in Adobe Photoshop and Premiere. The backgrounds and textures were photos I'd taken of various items of denim clothing.
French Workwear Company Logo and Branding
I designed the logos and general branding for a company that buys and sells vintage french workwear clothes, based in London.
My designs and illustrations were based around examples of authentic French workwear from the past.
I was commissioned to create a design for a promotional tote bag for the London-based company, Cucumber Tony.
The company provides a simple, intuitive way to deploy WiFi networks. I usually create my abstract striped tote bags by hand using paint and masking tape. For this one I wanted a similar approach but instead I drew everything out using Posca pen then scanned it into Adobe Illustrator, creating the resulting vector file.
Betty & Bernie Logo Design
The brief for this design was an interesting mix. The client wanted a logo incorporating nautical elements, bold colours but specially yellow, and sailor tattoo style writing.
After pitching a series of sketches including various nautical symbols the client loved the star idea, and I also included the scroll as it matched the products that the company would be making.
The finished logo is at the top of this page. The images below various images from the entire creative process, ending with my original sketches at the bottom.
Pacific Trash Record Label Design
I designed the record label image for Seattle-based indie label Pacific Trash, based on a simple brief created by the label head. The image was completed using my usual mix of handmade paint and Posca pen drawing, but I used Photoshop a lot more to edit the end result. The first image shows my logo design on the latest cassette release for Brooklyn band Lazy Queen, and my 'summer' palm trees design and 'winter' evergreen trees design on badges.
I will be working on more in-house design work for Pacific Trash in the near future, and I'm available for any freelance logo or branding design jobs.
Through the website Talenthouse I entered a competition to design 'good vibes' inspired artwork for the phone company Viber. I didn't win but I did get commended and shared by the official Viber Twitter account.
I'm sharing it here as I was really pleased with the results and I plan to turn them into prints at some point.
At the top of this page is a band poster I recently design for San Francisco based band Sirena Victima. The font was created by hand then manipulated in PhotoShop, as was the background which was originally an older abstract painting of mine.
Below that are some of the posters I made for my own art shows, again in PhotoShop, but incorporating some of my own scanned hand drawn elements.
I'm keen to work with creatives, bands, and musicians on artwork. Get in touch through the contacts page if you're interested.
Custom Logo Design Service
Get in touch if you want to hire me to design a logo or branding for you. My approach is different from many others as I always include hand drawn or painted elements into my designs. These aren't standard fonts and shapes that everyone else will be using, so what you'll get will look incredibly original. I will always try to incorporate any requests and odd ideas you have.
