A piece of toast for dipping, with a little of the yolk dripping off, is pictured floating above it. In the UK we call this set-up 'egg and soldiers'. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eEggs are a regular theme in my art, and the first painting I ever sold involved eggs. This painting is a continuation of that theme but on a larger scale canvas than usual. The moka is a stove-top or electric coffee maker that brews coffee by passing boiling water pressurised by steam through ground coffee. It's a staple of Italian culture. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAs a contrast to the red form of the coffee maker I used a terrazzo pattern kitchen surface on the bottom half of the painting, and some pale pastel blue and yellow tiles on the top. The amazing graphic image of the seagull and the stark blue and red design immediately caught my eye, and I took a picture of it. The sign was framed by hills and trees on the edge of the park on a clear summer's day. It wasn't until I got back home to London that I researched and realised that these signs have a bit of an interesting history behind them. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe scenic drive route was invented for the Golden Gate International Exposition held at Treasure Island in 1939, the famous bridge having only recently been built at the time. The distinctive seagull signs were designed by an artist who won a competition held by SF’s Downtown Association in 1955 and have marked the scenic drive ever since. However there is a history of the signs being stolen as souvenirs and they take a long time to get replaced. Obviously I'm not the only person to have noticed the awesome quirky design of them! So instead of stealing a sign, you can now buy this one-off A3 painting instead. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAs well as being inspired by San Francisco itself, the work of David Hockney is another obvious influence on me here, being a pop inspired Englishman who famously painted colourful Californian views. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAs with my other paintings, which are often of food, I've aimed for a graphic 'pop' style rather than any sort of classical realism. I always wanted one of these phones when I was younger but never had one. I still love the colourful retro design of this kind of novelty telephone. Unlike a lot of my paintings this one shows a human hand holding the object, and two comic book style panels to show the phone open and closed. This unframed A3 painting shows a hand taking the first slice of a fresh pepperoni pizza, leaving satisfying trails of molten cheese. Whilst the graphic representation of food is a regular theme for me, the inclusion of human elements is more rare.
