Continuing my obsession with retro foods and brightly designed sweets packaging, my latest painting shows an opened pack of Opal Fruits. Never heard of Opal Fruits? It was the UK brandname for Starburst sweets until 1998 when a global rebrand saw the name phased out. So for people of a certain generation Starburst will forever be known as Opal Fruits.

Launched in the 1960s, the original flavours were strawberry, lemon, orange, and lime, the latter later becoming cherry.

As ever with many of my works the design goes around the edge and the shape of the canvas mimics the actual shape of the sweets packaging - so it's like an actual art object as well as a painting of it. However with this one I wanted to show the wrapper being partially opened at one end as I felt showing some of the colourful sweet wrappers inside broke up the yellow colour field nicely.

The end result is a bold, bright painting that would brighten up any room in your home, or would make an ideal gift for someone with a sweet tooth.

It is painted in acrylics and Posca paint pens on a stretched cotton canvas. It's signed and dated on the back frame, as depicted.
