This painting recreates my own beloved red Italian moka pot. The moka is a stove-top or electric coffee maker that brews coffee by passing boiling water pressurised by steam through ground coffee. It's a staple of Italian culture.
As a contrast to the red form of the coffee maker I used a terrazzo pattern kitchen surface on the bottom half of the painting, and some pale pastel blue and yellow tiles on the top. Another icon of Italian design, Terrazzo material is usually used for floors and walls, and occasionally kitchen counters like the one depicted here.
As usual in my work I'm less interested in 3D realism, instead opting for a bold graphic 2D impact.
