When I moved into a new home in 2021 a friend gave us a Prayer Plant, or a Maranta Fascinator, to give its official name. Aside from its striking red-veined leaves and eye-catching colours, the interesting thing about this Brazilian rainforest originated plant is that it folds up its leaves every evening, hence the prayer name. While I often avoid more traditional nature-based still-life subjects, this plant's image fascinated me so much that I've painted it a few times.
This version features more than one leaf, has a more realistic perspective and style, and they're set against a black and white tiled wall effect to contrast with the striking colours of the plant. The end result is a work that would brighten up any room in the house.

I've been inspired to create work like this by classic pop artists like Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Patrick Caulfield.
